The Theosophical Society (Adyar)

Amendments to the Society's Rules and Regulations

Letter to Betty Bland by William Delahunt

Dear Mrs. Bland,

Greetings and Fraternal Respect.

As Theosophists we are all on the same team. And we all have our ideas and opinions about what we think is best for our Society. The input of Every member is important in forming a consensus to guide our decisions. Acting on the consensus of the membership is how Theosophical decisions should be made.

The membership must be given the opportunity for Full and Unedited information about the issues to be acted upon.

The Theosophical Society is Not the Roman Church where decisions are made by the “ipse dixit” of one person, or a council of eite officers, nor are Theosophical Leaders of any special ecclesiastical rank or standing to be issuing “ipse dixits.”

I don’t think that many Theosophists have any problems with the idea of Change. Change is a part of our Teachings. Any reasonable person would agree that at certain times change is necessary to keep up with the times and adjust ourselves to new conditions.

So CHANGE is NOT the issue, please don't confuse things and make it one.

The issue that outrages many members is the METHOD which you used to attempt to impose certain of your ideas about change on the membership in an urgent and secretive manner without their knowledge or consent.

The reasoning you give for your proposals have been rebutted and found to be defective by many prominent Theosophists from around the world.

The International President must remain a “Free Agent” to represent the membership from around the world. Your proposal would make the International President beholden to the General Council and “Special Interests.”

The Society as it is currently structured guarantees that Every member is completely free to express himself, hold opinions, and act (within the bounds of mutual courtesy) as he see fit, with impunity.

Your proposal would impose and promote conformity and seriously inhibit freedom of expression.

Your accusations against the Indian Section are NOT valid nor are they “Fair Play.”

The Indian Section is Not to blame for our current situation. It is WE Ourselves that are to blame. IF we were doing the things we should be doing. There is NO Power on earth or in any other dimension that could stop our growth. Let’s look to ourselves and stop pointing the finger.

WHY this spirit of Competition, Ambition and Jealousy? These are certainly against our Theosophical Ethos of Altruism, Goodwill and Fraternal Affection.

Let’s refocus on the main issues which have members outraged and lets be
perfectly clear ...

1. No One is Against Change when it is legitimate and necessary.

2. No One Wants To Be Deprived of Their Freedom & Right To Vote.

3. There needs to be transparency and openness ... (Their should be NOTHING to hide.)

4. The Members want Leaders who can be TRUSTED. They don’t want to be tricked and deceived.

5. Any Theosophical Leader must have a genuine Respect for the intelligence of the membership, and strive to attain a consensus of opinion before making major decisions.

6. The Society and Its Important Work MUST always take first priority and Not egotistic agendas.

Your reply fails to address These Major Concerns.

I think that any reasonable person would have to agree that the METHOD you used to attempt to impose your proposals on the membership in such an urgent and secretive manner without a consensus, discussion, or knowledge by the membership IS JUSTIFIABLE CAUSE FOR SUSPICION.

Fraternally,
William Delahunt
