SOME COMMENTS OF MEMBERSHIP STATISTICS
2007/08
IN RELATION TO THE PRESIDENT ELECTIONS 2008
For the TS Membership Statistics 2007/08 data from the Summary of Statistics 2007 from Annual Report of the Theosophical Society 2007 and the Voting Results of President Election 2008 were used. It has been established that in the Voting Results of President Election 2008 some data are missing and that therefore it wasn’t possible to achieve complete results. Namely, in that document the following data aren’t available: number of members eligible to vote for the following sections: America-Central, Canada, Mexico, Togo and Ecuador, while the number of members eligible to vote in Pakistan (124) and in Ukraine (15) exceeds the number of members as reported in the Summary of Statistics 2007, where number of members in Pakistan was reported as being 89 and in Ukraine 11 (But as it was available only a copy of the document in question it is possible that these data are not 100 % correct.)
The TS Membership Statistics 2007/08 begins with the Total Population and number of TS members in relative countries. For now there are missing data for the regions of Africa East and Central, Africa West, America central and Asia South-East. Hopefully they will be completed with the help of local theosophists. The percentages and respectively the number of theosophists per every 100.000 of total population show that far ahead on the top of the list we find Iceland with 121,56 theosophists, followed by New Zealand (23,52), Finland (8,73), Singapore (7,29), Australia (6,45), Cuba (5,12), Slovenia (3,53), Wales (2,71), Netherlands (2,57), Scotland (2,31) and Portugal (2,13). There are several countries where number of theosophists per every 100.000 of total population is between 1 and 2 (Bolivia, Costa Rica, England, India, Ireland, Italy, Puerto Rico, Sweden, USA and Uruguay). While on the end of the list we find Pakistan, Peru, Japan and Ukraine.
The number of members eligible to vote compared with the total number of members gives us percentage showing certain steadiness of membership in relative country or, on the other hand, certain fluctuation of membership reasons of which can hardly be discovered without the comparison of detailed membership data for, at least, past two years. In some cases it is certainly due to the influx of new members. Hopefully these data will soon be available, so that more light can be thrown on the reasons for the difference between the total number of membership and the number of those who are eligible to vote.
So, we find this steadiness of membership in Africa, East and Central, Austria, Iceland, Italy, Sri Lanka and Croatia (between 90 and 100 %); then there are several sections where range of steadiness of membership is between 50 and 90%, and some sections where percentage is under 50%: Philippines (48, 2), Wales (44, 4), Ivory Coast (34, 4) and Venezuela (25, 0).
When we compare these data with the numbers of those who actually voted in the President Election 2008 we can not discover any overall pattern of the relation between the steadiness of membership and the level of abstention but there are some cases in which this relation can be very indicative. For instance, in Iceland, in the section with the highest percentage of TS members in Total Population and with very high membership steadiness only 16, 1 % of members eligible to vote did actually vote. In Italy, with equally high membership steadiness, this percentage is also quite low, 39, 7 %, while in Sri Lanka it is 42, 2 % and so on. Therefore, along with an overall high abstention of voters these data, in my opinion, additionally shows that there is present in TS membership certain disagreement with the policy of actual TS leadership and the choices available at the Elections 2008.
